The December 3, 2013 issue of the Sentencing
Project’s “Disenfranchisement News” comments on a recent article by Heather Ann Thompson that appeared in The Atlantic in October.
The Sentencing Project writes:
Racial disparities in mass incarceration and the adoption of felony disenfranchisement provisions have led to the large-scale disenfranchisement of black voters, diluting the political power of the black community. In addition, because incarcerated individuals are counted as residents, counties housing prisons gain representation even though people cannot vote behind bars in 48 states. Due to these distortions of democracy, Thompson argues, “Americans’ power to even rethink, let alone undo, the policies and practices that have led to mass incarceration via the franchise has been severely compromised.”
