Hedge fund chairman and founder of the Open Society Foundation George Soros gave a million dollar donation to help revitalize the “Yes on 19” campaign. Proposition 19 would allow California citizens over the age of 21 to possess, cultivate and transport a small amount of marijuana for their personal use. While Proposition 19 has lost some support in recent polls, and was trashed by U.S. Attorney Holder and members of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Soros’ large donation is expected to close the gap between anti- and pro- Proposition 19 forces.
The money will be used to encourage proponents of Proposition 19 to get out and vote. A media blitz is expected to generate support with former high ranking California police brass, and others, educating the public about the benefits of passing the proposition. Public safety issues, such as putting marijuana cartels out of business have been addressed in the first television spot by former San Jose Police Chief, Joseph McNamara. The media ads will also speak on the failure of the war on marijuana. With California’s state budget sinking deeper into debt, the state needs an infusion of money, and the television ads are sure to concentrate on how the tax on marijuana generated by the passage of Proposition 19 will add millions to the State’s coffers.
