Online website helps service providers seeking grants
The Legal Action Center, an organization that has been fighting discrimination against people with criminal records or HIV/AIDS, and the Open Society Foundation,an organization led by George Soros to promote human rights, have partnered tin the creation of a toolkit for service providers seeking funds for alternatives to incarceration, reentry, and substance abuse prevention and treatment programs.

LAC issued the following press release that Reentry Central is pleased to share with our readers.

WASHINGTON, DC, March 2, 2011 – The Legal Action Center is pleased to announce the release of a toolkit to help providers obtain federal Byrne JAG funds to support alternatives to incarceration (ATI), reentry, and substance use treatment and prevention services. This toolkit, funded by our partners at the Open Society Foundations, is available free on our website.

With state, federal, and private resources spread thinner than at any time in recent memory, funding for alternatives to incarceration (ATI), reentry services, and substance use treatment and prevention services is limited, and many providers are looking for ways to expand the breadth of funding streams they use to initiate, maintain, expand, or improve these important programs and services.

The federal Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne/JAG), provides formula-based direct funding to state and local governments to address local public safety needs, and may be used to support the aforementioned services. Service providers must partner with their state or local governments to obtain the funding, however, as nongovernmental organizations are ineligible for direct funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
