While some businesses thrive, others are harder to get off the ground

When Kwabena A. Nkrumah collected $10,000 from the District, he sunk most of it into a used Mercedes.

The money came from a grant he received through a program that helps ex-offenders start or grow businesses — and the purchase of the car was a bet on his future.

Would the 2008 Mercedes-Benz S550, which had a “salvage” flag on its title, be a moneymaker for his fledgling car dealership or a mutt? Would the thing even start?
