Homelessness A Rising Problem for Newly Released Prisoners
Date:  11-11-2011

Transition planning is a key to successful reentry, but often unavailable to prisoners
Recently Reentry Central received an email by a concerned citizen who befriended a formerly incarcerated person who is living under a bridge because he has no where else to go. The person was dropped off in Hartford, CT by the Department of Corrections at the end of his sentence, apparently with no provisions for food, clothing, or shelter. We at RC are aware that this lack of concern for reentering prisoners is a national problem. Whether this lack of concern is due to apathy, or budget cuts, the consequences of poor release planning has a direct negative impact not only on formerly incarcerated persons, but also on communities and public safety.

The Reentry Policy Council of the Council of State Governments Justice Center produced a report that addresses the problem of homelessness among formerly incarcerated persons, and offers some sage recommendations on how to correct this growing problem.
