Vera Institute: What Incarceration Costs Taxpayers
Costs outside of corrections budgets give a more accurate picture of just how much taxpayers are paying
In its report The Price of Prisons: What Incarceration Costs Taxpayers , the Vera Institute provides startling information about the billions of extra dollars Americans are paying outside of their states’ corrections budget to keep prisoners locked up. The information in the report was obtained from a 2010 survey in which 40 states participated.
In some states, costs outside the corrections budget were minimal, (1.0 in Idaho and less than one percent in Arizona), while in other states the costs were far higher, ( 23.7 percent in Texas, and a whopping 34 percent in Connecticut).
The report provides a fact sheet for each of the 40 states that participated in the Vera Institute survey.
