Human Rights Watch Researching Compassionate Release Policy Of Federal Bureau of Prisons
Date:  04-13-2012

Goal is to publish report with analysis and recommendations
The following information was provided by CURE National:

Human Rights Watch is researching compassionate release for federal prisoners who have extremely serious or terminal illnesses, with the goal of publishing a report on the topic that would contain cases, analysis and recommendations.

It would welcome being contacted by current or former federal prisoners or their families who have asked the Bureau of Prisons (BoP) to make a motion to the sentencing court for a sentence reduction for seriously/terminally ill prisoners on compassionate release grounds.

The applications could be pending, have been granted or denied. The court could have granted or denied the motion. Human Rights Watch cannot provide legal advice or assistance with currently pending applications or motions.

Human Rights Watch is willing to reimburse for mailing costs and the costs of copying documents (it is especially helpful for them to have copies of as many relevant documents as possible: applications, medical reports, appeals of denials, submissions to court, opinions by the courts, etc.).

Those interested in sharing information about their cases or cases with which they are familiar should contact: Jamie Fellner, Human Rights Watch, 350 Fifth Avenue, NYC, NY 10118.
