Carnegie Mellon criminologist Alfred Blumstein believes that if the left and right political factions get together, major criminal justice reform will be possible. In a speech at the Annual Criminal Justice Association forum, Blumstein opined that the political right wants to reign in the billions of tax dollars being spent to lock up Americans, and those on the left want to change sentencing laws that incarcerate prisoners for decades without rehabilitation. The eminent criminologist called “excessively long sentences” for most drug cases a waste of tax money.
It is the opinion of the corrections chief of Florida that if both sides work together, America can use some of the money, now being spent on incarceration, for rehabilitation programs. Investing in substance abuse treatment for inmates, rather than on prison cells, would have a “major impact on recidivism” according to Chief James McDonough.
