Two new books on mass incarceration and reentry provide invaluable information for those trying to understand America’s criminal justice system
In 1999 Marc Mauer, Executive Director of The Sentencing Project published his book Race to Incarcerate which has been hailed by criminal justice scholars for its ability to provide answers to the question of how America has become to be known as the “Incarceration Nation.”

Recently, The New Press announced that a new, updated and illustrated version of the book has been published as Race to Incarcerate: A Graphic Retelling. The announcement from The New Press declares that Mauer and illustrator Sabrina Jones present “…a compelling argument that mass incarceration has replaced the kind of civic institutions and economic welfare crucial to creating a just society.” click here to go to website .

With mass incarceration comes mass reentry back into society, as the majority of inmates will be released one day. Recognizing this fact of life, Matthew S. Crow, Ph.D, Associate Professor and Chair of Justice Studies, University of West Florida and John Ortiz Smykla, PhD, Distinguished University Professor, University of West Florida, co-edited Offender Reentry: Rethinking Criminology and Criminal Justice. The book is described by Crow and Smykla as presenting seventeen “original research articles and essays on various reentry topics, plus a "voices" feature that brings in the perspectives of reentry professionals in the field and former offenders who are experiencing reentry.” Offender Reentry: Rethinking Criminology and Criminal Justice, which also offers links to podcasts and videos pertaining to issues covered in the various chapters, is available from Jones and Bartlett Learning.Click here to go to website .
